Opportunity and #budget2017

Opportunity def:

An occasion or situation that makes it possible to do something that you want to do or have to do, or the possibility of doing something

(Cambridge English Dictionary)

It is heartening to hear the word ‘opportunity’ said in the context of tonight’s Federal budget, dubbed ‘Building for the future.’

The work that we do here at Opportunity Child is all aimed at building for the future. We work with communities and organisations to improve opportunities for the children of Australia. Working collectively, we are aligning our individual strategies for shared early childhood outcomes.

1 in 5. Yes, 1 in 5 Australian five year old children start school with big challenges in learning and in life.

The issue of early childhood vulnerability is hugely significant nationally and globally.

It deserves immediate attention.

So when I hear leaders talk about opportunity it gives me hope. Hope that investment will be made in systems change and supporting people in place. In their place. On issues that matter most to them.

Because if we don’t take this approach we are looking at implications for the rest of the lives of those 1 in 5 children.
