Currently, one in five Australian children is considered developmentally vulnerable. Their problems are large and complex, but we don’t accept that they are impossible. In fact, we are very optimistic that they can be solved.
We need to move away from the same old thinking and from trying to solve these problems on our own. We need to change the conversation – and ultimately, we need to change the system.
To do this, we need an imaginative, innovative and fresh approach. Instead of trying to create change in a system that is not working, we need to bring people, communities and organisations together to collectively create a new system that does work.
That is what it will take to create a real opportunity for Australia’s most vulnerable children – the curiousity, courage and space to innovate together and change the system.
The Opportunity Child initiative is focused on fostering that curiousity and courage – and in creating that innovative space and systems change through our collective impact work. We are working with communities to create a new path for social change in Australia: building on what the evidence says is needed for vulnerable children. We are demonstrating how system change can enable communities to achieve wider social change.
As a group, we are changing how we talk about the problems facing vulnerable children, and how we talk about solving them. We are certain this is Australia’s best chance to ensure all Australian children thrive in learning and in life.
